A highly significant correlation between relative abundances of Mariprofundus and Gallionella has been observed in marine hydrothermal iron mat communities ( Vander Roost et al., 2017 ); therefore, finding these two taxa co-occurring in benthic mats at Crater Lake provides further evidence of their co-colonization of hydrothermal iron mats.
