Because aquaporin-4 facilitates CSF transport out of the perivascular space, a present study supported by studies that were lacking AQP 4 exhibited a highly significant reduction in glymphatic clearance in the TBI brain ( 10 , 32 ), suggesting that this pathway may remove fluid and other waste products such as b-amyloid protein from the central nervous system ( 10 ).
