We used multiple keywords in the ISI search engine in the topic field using a complete list of possibilities including “social exchange theory,” “exchange relationships,” “evolution of social exchange theory,” and “exchange relations.” These searches returned highly significant empirical and conceptual references ( n = 3,221; Scopus = 1954 and ISI Web of Knowledge = 1,267).
