However, there is an increasing trend to explore the upgrading of lignin residues to higher value products, to contribute to circular carbon economy. 7,8 Lignin is a heterogenous complex aromatic polymer consisting of methoxylated phenyl propane units connected by various C–C and C–O–C bonds, of which the β-O-4 aryl ether is most abundant. 9 As such, lignin could provide an excellent source of bio-based aromatic monomers, mainly phenolics.
