When we examine spontaneous avoiding reactions of freely swimming paramecia, we find that both backward swimming duration and reorientation angle vary broadly (156 ± 81 ms and 114 ± 66°, respectively) ( Fig 9H ), and there is a small although highly significant correlation (linear regression, r = 0.2, p = 10 −11 ).
