Our main findings were the following: (1) sNFL was clearly increased in ALS patients; (2) In ALS patients, the correlation between sNFL and age was remarkably weaker than among NHCs; (3) Among ALS patients, females had higher sNFL levels than males, while among NHCs the difference was smaller and did not reach statistical significance; (4) In ALS, sNFL levels tended to be higher in disease forms displaying both UMN and LMN signs, and in particular showing predominance of UMN involvement, compared to variants with more prominent LMN features; (5) This was not valid for PLS, which was characterized by relatively low sNFL levels; (
