A similar pattern of correlations was observed in the control hippocampus, with strong or very strong statistically significant correlations identified between the percentages of CD74 high and HLA-DR high microglia (r = 0.750, p = 0.0255), Iba1 high and L-ferritin high microglia (r = − 0.833, p = 0.00830), Iba1 high and CD68 high microglia (r = − 0.683, p = 0.0503), and Iba1 high and CD74 high microglia (r = − 0.683, p = 0.0503), although the latter did not reach statistical significance (Fig. 4 B).
