Postoperative gut microbiota abundances were different between the participants with and without postoperative delirium Our analysis revealed that participants who developed postoperative delirium had higher Parabacteroides distasonis in their postoperative gut microbiota (average abundance 1.659 ± 0.984) compared to those who did not develop delirium (average abundance 0.850 ± 1.080) although, this difference was only marginally significant (Mann–Whitney U test, P = 0.064, Fig. 2A ).
