It is noteworthy that the fraction of metHb in cell-free Hb incubated samples reached ∼40%, while the typical metHb fraction of freshly thawed PolyHb is ∼5% after purification [ 55 ]; thus, auto-oxidation is nevertheless quite significant and the addition of antioxidants and/or reducing agents (e.g. ascorbic acid) may be considered to reduce oxidation of PolyHb [ 42 ].
