In all cases, the effect of attention was absent or only marginally significant in V1, which is not surprising since attentional effects are much weaker ( McAdams and Maunsell, 1999 ) or even absent ( Luck et al., 1997 ) in V1 compared to the higher-level regions of the occipito-temporal cortex.
