Although the respiratory values for V̇ E /V̇O 2 and V̇ E /V̇CO 2 were within normal limits, they showed a trend for an increased respiratory drive related to the amount and sensitivity of the central chemoreceptors and respiratory dead space and relate to an increase in brain PCO 2 , which stimulates breathing induced by metabolic acidosis [ 45 ].
