Although such a trade-off in the relative abundance of the two cell types did not reach statistical significance ( P = 0.1870, χ 2 test; a tendency toward significance was observed when proportions were computed over the whole pool of responsive units; P = 0.1), we nevertheless found a significant increase of the average value of the pattern index (PI = Z p − Z c , a commonly used scalar metric of patternness) from V1 (PI = −1.64 ± 0.31) to LM (PI = −0.57 ± 0.40; P < 0.05, unpaired t test).
