The difference in the rates of appeals of manuscripts handled by women and men Senior Editors in the Initial Assessment was marginal; we observed a trend towards fewer appeals over women Senior Editors’ assessments, but this trend did not reach statistical significance (Contingency table analysis, χ 2 (1) = 3.781, p = 0.052, Contingency coefficient = 0.013; Fig 1E ).
