Total necrosis was achieved in approximately 65% of the HCCs submitted to TACE, with no significant differences in efficacy between conventional TACE (using an embolic agent + chemotherapy) and drug-eluting bead TACE (using an embolic agent loaded with chemotherapeutic agents). Survival was found to be better among the patients in whom total necrosis of the HCC was achieved that among those in whom only partial necrosis was achieved, although the difference did not reach statistical significance.
