There is also a clear trend of mitochondrially encoded genes that function in OXPHOS having significantly higher expression in human cells, including those for cytochrome c oxidase subunits ( MT-CO1 , MT-CO2 , MT-CO3 ) but also mitochondrially encoded ATP synthase ( MT-ATP6 ) and mitochondrially encoded subunits of the NADH:ubiquinone oxidoreductase core of electron transport chain complex I ( MT-ND2 , MT-ND3 , MT-ND5 , and MT-ND6 ) ( Fig. 4a ).
