Sharpe et al ’s study with 113 participants with unknown status, although not statistically significant, showed a trend towards efficacy with a 15.8% GBS positive rate following 12 weeks of intervention from 23 to 25 weeks’ gestation (two capsules daily) in the probiotic arm versus 21.43% in the placebo arm (p=0.48). 49 Two other trials failed to find a difference in GBS colonisation rates 50 51 ; however, each only used one capsule a day.
