Directional climate change towards drier conditions and/or warmer temperatures would be a plausible explanation for positive trends, and this has in fact been observed, especially for Central America (with a strong trend toward less precipitation [ 41 – 43 ], and the Himalayas with a strong warming trend of high elevation ecosystems where trees were sampled [ 44 – 46 ].
