17 While higher numbers in the second and fourth quarters could indicate the role of fatigue within each half (as opposed to cumulative fatigue over the course of the match), one-third of injuries occurred in the first 5 minutes and more than 50% in the first 10 minutes of a player's effective playing time (when correcting for substitutions), with a strong trend showing fewer injuries as the minutes of the match increased.
