One RCT 13 has evaluated routine early ultrasound and reported a 13.6% fistula failure in the surveillance group, compared to 25.4% in the control group (ultrasound performed selectively, according to clinical indication), but the study was powered for a relatively large (20%) effect size, and the difference in maturation rates in the 2 groups did not reach statistical significance.
