Although a clear numerical difference was observed in the proportions of deaths from any cause at 3 years between groups (12.6% in the combination therapy group, 13.5% in the salmeterol group, 16.0% in the fluticasone group and 15.2% in the placebo group), which led to an absolute risk reduction of 2.6% in the combination therapy group compared to the placebo group (HR 0.825, 95% CI 0.681–1.002), the p-value was 0.052, just failing to reach statistical significance.
