In the as treated population, obstetric anal sphincter injury occurred in 29 (8%) of 377 women with lateral episiotomy and 39 (12%) of 325 women with no episiotomy, which did not reach statistical significance (risk difference −4.3% (95% CI −8.9% to 0.2%)) (supplementary table S1).
