Fruit scent composition as a medium for interpreting Carollia-Piper habitat patterns The variation in the fruit scent VOC data used in our analyses was not highly impacted by the evolutionary relationships between Piper species; there was no significant phylogenetic signal for almost all of the first 15 most common VOCs, with the exception of the most common VOC across the Piper species in the dataset, alpha-caryophyllene, which approached significance (Blomberg's K = 0.83, P = 0.053).
