A linear regression controlling for participants’ political party affiliation (i.e., which of the 13 parties running in the coming elections they supported) revealed a significant effect of zero-sum beliefs on the avoidance of political conversations ( b = 0.23, 95% CI[0.01, 0.44], t (390) = 2.07, p = 0.039; Table 1 , Model 1), although the zero-order correlation was only marginally significant ( b = 0.21, 95% CI[−0.002, 0.42], t (403) = 1.95, p = 0.052).
