The mean (standard deviation (SD)) age of patients in the surgical wards was significantly lower at 46.9 (17.3) years than that in the medical wards (51.1 (17.9) years) (p=0.02). The prevalence of smoking was numerically higher in the surgical compared with the medical wards, including both genders, but this did not reach statistical significance (Table 1) .
