Adolescents who started orthodontic treatment at a younger age have been found to have increased levels in the physical-appearance and global self-worth subscales after one year of treatment, whereas older adolescents showed a trend toward decreased self-esteem; however, at the end of treatment, both groups had similar levels of self-esteem [ 42 ].
