Our results show that initial noninvasive respiratory support modalities in patients with acute hypoxemic respiratory failure were most likely not associated with a reduced hazard of in-hospital death (no association in the primary analyses, weakly significant association in the sensitivity analysis), yet were associated with an increased probability of hospital discharge alive when compared to initial invasive mechanical ventilation.
