Fifteen-year experience of direct bridge with venoarterial extracorporeal membrane oxygenation to heart transplantation.

Although ECMO support after HTx is relatively high in our service, it could be explained by the following reasons: a significant increase in the age of the recipients and the percentage of recipients aged more than 60 years; the higher number of patients bridged with VADs, which in our experience more often require postoperative ECMO; despite the nonsignificant increase in the median age of the donors, the percentage of donors aged more than 60 years increased significantly; a nearly significant increase in the ischemic time; and finally an improvement in the global management of ECMO, resulting in a more liberal use of this technique.
