Despite the proven initial correlation between smoking and a higher risk of AF onset, in a sub-analysis of the population cohort REGARDS (REasons for Geographic And Racial Differences in Stroke), after adjustment for cardiovascular risk factors, smoking did not reach statistical significance as a risk factor for the development of AF; this raises the question of whether AF stems from other cardiological conditions induced by smoking i.e., CAD (coronary artery disease) or if smoking can independently provoke AF onset.
