For the species for which mite and domatia numbers were sufficiently variable to model, the number of domatia significantly positively predicted mite abundance in four cases ( Acer pensylvanicum , Acer rubrum , Betula papyrifera and Viburnum acerifolium ), whereas four species had only marginally significant positive relationships ( Acer saccharum , Fagus grandifolia , Tilia americana , and Vitis riparia ) , and four had no significant relationship ( Cornus rugosa, Fraxinus americana, Ostrya virginiana , and Quercus rubra ) . 4 Discussion Documenting the distribution of ecologically important traits within communities is a critical foundation for studies of the causes and consequences of ecological variation.
