For this, we leveraged statistical fine-mapping in a homogeneous population, stepwise conditional analysis of apparently independent highly significant GWAS lead signals, the exclusion of concealed regional variation through sequencing, and customized functional analyses from matched patient and control samples enriched for protective allele carriers in a recall-by-genotype setting.
