One popular answer to this so-called Levinthal’s paradox [ 72 ] is the assumption that the energy landscape exhibits a funnel-like structure for these specific proteins [ 75 , 87 ], with rather low energy barriers to neighboring local minima but a clear trend for the pathways on the landscape to guide the probability flow towards the low-energy region.
