These associations of hearing problems with functional [ 6 , 19 – 22 ] and mental health [ 7 , 25 – 28 ] are in line with previous research and supported our first and second hypotheses; the only exception was the non-significant between-person hearing effect on functional health, which might have failed to reach statistical significance due to the covariates we controlled for.
