For larger beech saplings (size class 2; 2.0-7.9 cm dbh), the results approached significance, with 287 stems ha -1 (95% CI = 19−556 stems ha -1 ) observed in treatment areas vs. 576 stems ha -1 (95% CI = 322−831 stems ha -1 ) in controls areas after five years ( p = 0.07).
