Lastly, we emphasize that not all lectins followed the simple rule of preferring higher surface-availability, as lectins such as PHA-L actually showed a trend of preferring their binding motif to be somewhat buried (Supplementary Fig. 10e and f ), potentially indicating additional interactions with distal sequence contexts.
