A post-hoc analysis on 23 prospectively treated C1-2 joint fusion patients, all of whom were first treated with an intra-articular lateral C1-2 joint local anesthetic and steroid injection, showed a trend toward higher surgical success in patients who had success with the injection, but the response was not statistically significant, possibly due to the small numbers of patients in each category.
