Our findings contrast with results from a retrospective study of patients with stage IV pancreatic cancer treated within a veterans administration medical center, which showed a trend for faster hospice referrals in patients who lived >60 miles from their treatment center. 43 However, it is understandable that patients with metastatic disease and shorter life expectancy may elect for hospice sooner given the toll of significant travel on the patient and the expected poor prognosis of these patients.
