Although demented individuals showed a trend toward lower microbial diversity, our results suggest that dementia-related alterations are characterized less by a global loss of diversity and more by specific compositional shifts, with depletion of beneficial taxa and enrichment of potentially harmful ones, resulting in a distinct microbial signature.
