Consistently with the premise that increased microbial diversity marks periodontitis progression, the results demonstrated that FE-DBD treatment exhibited a notable decreasing trend in the alpha diversity indices (Richness, Chao1, and Shannon) of the microbial community, whereas these indices showed an increasing trend in the control group.
No statistically significant differences ( p ≥ 0.05) in the Richness, Shannon, or Chao1 indices were observed between the FE-DBD and control groups at either baseline or two weeks post-treatment, although the p -value for the Richness index approached marginal significance at 0.05 ( Figure 4 ).
