A meta-analysis showed that among patients with chronic respiratory diseases, the association between self-management skills and hospitalisation days was only marginally significant. 8 Another systematic review showed that among patients with chronic heart failure, self-management interventions had a positive, although not always significant effect on the number of hospital admissions. 10 Furthermore, the rationale can go both ways: self-management might also induce healthcare utilisation.
