Interestingly, spike integral analysis revealed that the optically-triggered oSparse triggered spikes showed a strong trend toward lower area under the curve (AUC) values due to the almost instantaneous nature of optically-induced depolarization versus the slow pacemaker-like ramping toward firing threshold that was observed for naturally occurring Ca 2+ spikes ( Figures 5F – H ).
