The longitudinal evaluation revealed a clear trend toward increase for selected metabolites whose serum levels were low during the acute phase of the infection: those progressively increased to levels comparable to those detected in HCs, specifically palmitic acid, 4-trimethylammoniumbutanoic acid, hypoxanthine, glucose-3 and sorbose (Fig. 4d, e ).
