Burn Surgery Contrary to the hypothesis, the AI models showed a trend of overrepresenting White individuals in pediatric burn surgery images, despite socioeconomic factors that disproportionately affect non-White populations. 29 Moreover, numerous socioeconomic factors, including living in low-income areas, single-parent households, and overcrowded conditions, contribute to an increased burn risk, 30 – 32 disproportionately affecting non-White populations. 33 – 35 This observation suggests that the AI models may lack a nuanced understanding of social determinants of health that contribute to disparities in certain medical conditions.
