A factorial PERMANOVA including treatment (defined as the combination of selection type and inoculation factor) and lineage revealed that treatment explained a substantial proportion of rhizosphere microbiome variation ( R 2 = 0.36, P = 0.001), whereas lineage accounted for a much smaller proportion of variance ( R 2 = 0.02) and was only marginally significant ( P = 0.079).
