The subgroup analysis of a fairly small cohort of patients with acute decompensated heart failure and primarily metabolic (676 patients) and respiratory (937 patients) alkalemia revealed a trend towards better survival in the later group (9.3% versus 6.7%), but these differences did not reach statistical significance [ 3 ].
