Although the survival differences between the groups were not significant after PSM, patients with pleomorphic carcinoma consistently showed a trend towards poorer outcomes, together with pronounced neutrophil activation and NET formation, suggesting that its aggressive phenotype cannot be solely attributed to tumour stage or smoking exposure.
