These results extend our 2-year study showing that discontinuation of ASMs before hospital discharge is safe 5 and provides additional support for the ILAE recommendation that “following cessation of acute provoked seizures without evidence for neonatal-onset epilepsy, ASMs should be discontinued before discharge home, regardless of magnetic resonance imaging or electroencephalographic findings.” 14 Adjusted FSIQ at age 5 to 6 years showed a trend toward significantly higher IQ in the children whose ASMs were discontinued prior to hospital discharge (adjusted difference +10 points, p = .06).
