Early studies showed a trend toward improved OS with adjuvant chemoradiotherapy over surgery alone; however, these trials were notable for small sample size, study design, quality control, and compliance limitations (Gastrointestinal Tumor Study Group and European Organization for Research and Treatment of Cancer; ref. 18 ).
