A recently published study outside our review timeframe examined similar canal-fill metrics and found that automated impaction yielded improved canal fill and, on average, larger femoral components, although these differences did not reach statistical significance. 25 The tendency for automated devices to insert larger femoral components has also been reported by Thomason et al, 8 who found that automated impaction resulted in a statistically significant increase in femoral component size compared with the preoperatively templated size.
