In agreement, 5α-reductase levels were significantly higher in elderly low-exercise rats and showed a tendency to increase in adult high-exercise rats, which, however, did not reach statistical significance. 80 Interestingly, exercise is known to represent a stress factor able to stimulate, in a dose- and intensity-dependent manner, the production of neurosteroids, confirming the observations of Aoyama and colleagues on the effects of high-intensity exercise. 81 In fact, other preclinical evidence has investigated the levels of neurosteroids, such as the enzymes involved in their biosynthesis, in rodent models undergoing forced swimming stress.
