Among non-participants, abstinence also increased from 7% at initial contact up to 17% at 12 months post-surgery ( p = 0.3). Comparing abstinence among participants versus non-participants, while there was a strong trend for higher 12-month abstinence of 42% among participants versus 17% among non-participants, this was not statistically significant ( p = 0.11).
